Guillotine Blades to reduce chipping in Paper and Print Industry

  • Guillotine blades made of Standard steel usually start with very small, barely noticeable chipping. It is possible to continue using them, but the results won’t be as sharp or as clean as before. As a blunt blade begins to “push” paper instead of slicing it, it results in poor-quality edges and tearing and shredding of the paper when cutting.
  • HSS steel blades are more resistant to chipping than standard steel blades. They might even cut through staples and lighter inclusions without being damaged.
  • Tungsten blades are more brittle, which is why, when they chip, it is easy to spot. These blades cannot be used until the next sharpening service.

It is advisable to choose a paper guillotine blade upon its application. If you are in doubt, please contact us and our technical expert will advise you.

Frequently Asked Questions from our Customers

What factors of guillotine blades can affect their performance?

Types of cutting paper The most common cutting materials used in printing are paper, paperboard and cardboard. Such cutting materials are categorized as soft, normal and hard. If guillotine cutter blades for soft and normal cutting materials are used on hard cutting materials, they will quickly wear out and become blunt. The main reason for this is that hard cutting materials display great resistance during cutting.

How often should I sharpen my paper guillotine blade?

The frequency of sharpening depends on the operational cycle, the workload of the blades, and the blade material: High Speed Steel guillotine blades cut about twice as much paper as Standard Steel, while Tungsten Carbide blades might complete up to 20 times as many cuts as HSS blades.

Can guillotine blades cut materials other than paper?

Yes, depending on specification, they can also cut:
  • Cardboard
  • Light board
  • Laminated paper
  • Packaging materials
  • We have customers who use our paper guillotine blades for scratching the ice rink's surface!

Did you know? Cutting Tools Insights & Industry Facts..

Despite the name “cutting,” guillotine blades don’t simply slice through paper. They create a controlled shearing action against a counter blade, reducing force and improving edge quality.
