How to understand it is time to sharpen your granulator blades?
It depends upon how often you use them. Because it is hard to set a scale generally, we recommend to periodically inspect your granulator blades for sharpness. As granulator rotor and bed knives process some of the most demanding materials in cutting applications and can be damaged or blunted unpredictably.
To check that your granulator machine is performing well, first collect the regrind material and look at its consistency. Are the pieces all roughly about the same size? How do they compare with the size of the pellets you are using? Secondly, drop the material back into the container and see how much dust and fines remain on your hand as a result.
Cumberland granulators are designed to uniformly and consistently size reduce any plastic scrap with a minimum of “fines”. Therefore, if you notice excessive fines, blotched outcome, and vibration of your granulator machine during the process, then it is time to check sharpness of its granulator blades. We understand that this is always a postponing job, as it takes a long time to proceed and during this maintenance action, the machine is down, and production is halted.
However, to achieve perfect cutting results and decrease the wear factor on a granulator, blades should be maintained in sharp conditions. Waiting until the knives have been chipped or otherwise damaged brings to a heavy impact during operation. As a result it would cause reduction in knife life. Regular sharpening service would allow to keep used blades over purchasing the new ones at a significant cost.

Cumberland granulator machine has a set of blade tolerances that provide measurements for the new and sharpened blades. We always ensure these tolerances when sharpen rotor and bed knives.
Our Cumberland granulator blades sharpening service involves various steps. In the beginning, we clean the blade and remove any residue to facilitate a high-quality sharpening. Then we measure the blades, to make sure we remove only minimum material ensuring the tightest tolerances during sharpening stage.
Please notice, the minimum tolerances given for the rotor knife and bed knife cannot be combined on the same set of blades.
